Tenways Wayfarer Review: One of the Smoothest Riding eBikes We’ve Tested

DSC03434

There are a lot of commuter eBikes around the $2,000 price point making big promises. Most claim premium ride quality, natural pedal feel, and long range. But after testing over 200 electric rides, we’ve learned something important: spec sheets rarely tell the full story.

The new Tenways Wayfarer surprised us.

Instead of chasing huge power numbers and aggressive acceleration times, Tenways went in a different direction. The Wayfarer focuses on creating one of the smoothest and most refined riding experiences we’ve tested in this category.

And unlike channels that ride around the block and call it a review, we put this thing through the full RiderGuide process: verified weight testing, acceleration testing, braking, hill climbing, motor noise testing, lux measurements, thermal measurements, and real-world range testing.

Additionally, the Wayfarer’s build quality is commendable, featuring a robust frame that instills confidence. The materials used are not just appealing but also functional, providing durability for daily commutes.

Weight test

Manufacturers often exaggerate or under-report bike weights, especially once pedals and accessories are included.

Tenways claimed 66 lb. Our industrial scale showed 66.05 lb. That’s essentially perfect accuracy and honestly refreshing to see.

DSC03462
Verified Weight
66.05LB
Tenways claimed 66 lb. We measured within half an ounce. The kind of honesty most brands in this category skip.

At 66 pounds, it’s also lighter than many competing commuter bikes in this category. While it isn’t featherweight, it’s manageable enough for apartment living or carrying up a couple flights of stairs.

RiderGuide Testing · 02

Motor noise test

We measured 62 dB, roughly equivalent to two people having a conversation.

The motor doesn’t feel loud, harsh, or intrusive. It almost disappears underneath you while riding.

Motor Noise
62DB
About the volume of a normal conversation. One of the quietest mid-tier commuter motors we’ve tested all year.

RiderGuide Testing · 03

Headlight test

Our lux meter measured ~650 lux. It’s not among the brightest systems we’ve seen, but it’s enough for moderate-speed riding in urban environments.

If you’re consistently riding dark bike paths or pushing close to top speed at night, we’d still recommend adding a stronger supplemental light.

Acceleration & top speed

Our acceleration runs:

0 to 10 mph
2.83 s
0 to 20 mph
8.46 s
0 to 25 mph
12.56 s
1/8 mile
21.62 s

Those numbers aren’t class-leading, but that’s also missing the point of this bike. The Wayfarer isn’t trying to launch you off the line.

Instead, it delivers power in a smooth, natural, highly refined way that feels more like your legs suddenly became superhuman rather than a motor shoving you forward.

We briefly saw 29 mph at top speed. To maintain that, you’ll still contribute some pedal input. This isn’t one of those bikes where you sit there like a passenger while the motor does everything. The system actively works with you.

What makes it different

The Wayfarer’s secret sauce

This bike behaves differently than many budget eBikes. Instead of simply dumping power whenever you move the throttle, the system feels integrated into your riding style.

Most budget eBikes
“Pedal… then MOTOR!”
The Wayfarer
“Pedal normally… and suddenly your legs became stronger.”

That’s hard to communicate on a spec sheet, but very easy to feel after riding it.

Braking

The hydraulic brakes performed extremely well. The two-piston setup delivered:

DSC03470
  • Strong stopping power
  • Good modulation
  • Easy two-finger braking
  • Very predictable feel

We never felt nervous pushing speeds because the braking felt confidence-inspiring throughout testing.

RiderGuide Testing · 06

Hill climbing

Hill climbing stabilized around 10 to 16 mph. It wasn’t among the strongest climbers we’ve tested in this category. Heavier riders, or riders dealing with steep hills, will notice speed reductions sooner than on more powerful bikes.

Still, for commuter use and moderate grades, it performs well enough.

Real-world range

DSC03479

Our test conditions were far from ideal:

  • Rider weight: ~210 lb with gear
  • Wind: 8 to 9 mph
  • Temperature: ~50°F
  • Motor-heavy riding style
Tested Range
21.2MI
Motor-heavy riding in cold, windy conditions. Pedal normally and 40 to 50 mi feels very realistic.

What’s impressive isn’t just the number. The battery indicator and range prediction system stayed remarkably accurate throughout the ride with very little fluctuation.

If you pedal normally and actually ride the bike the way Tenways intends, reaching 40 to 50 mi feels very realistic.

Final word

RiderGuide verdict

The Tenways Wayfarer stands out because it doesn’t try to win with brute force. Instead, it wins with refinement.

Some eBikes feel like you’re riding a bicycle with a motor bolted onto it afterward. The Wayfarer feels like the entire bike was designed around making the riding experience itself better.

If you want one of the most natural-feeling commuter rides we’ve tested recently, this thing deserves serious consideration.
