Mitchell has been fascinated by electric scooters since 2019. He began sharing his enthusiasm on his YouTube channel, “RK9 Rides,” in 2020. He joined Rider Guide in 2023, and between the two channels, he spends seven days a week riding, testing, and writing about electric scooters. He has tested dozens of models from dozens of brands and is always on the lookout for the newest and greatest scooters. His current favorite models are the Nami Klima and the NIU KQi3 Max.

Super 73 dominates the moped-style electric bike segment. Having ridden a couple of their bikes myself, I understand why people spend $3,400 or more. But the feature-packed Yadea Trooper 01 is a great alternative for less, and you can use the cash you save for future upgrades.

Yadea Trooper 01 - $1,899

The Yadea Trooper 01 is a very well-built ebike I can recommend for several reasons, including its long range and name-brand battery, hydraulic brakes, powerful 750W hub motor, and 4-inch wide fat tires.

While the full suspension might not have as much travel as more expensive bikes, I found it more than capable off-road, and you can swap the bike’s components pretty easily when it comes time to upgrade.

A Powerful 750W Motor and Long-Range, LG-Made Battery

The Yadea Trooper 01 packs 750 Watts of power in its motor, which is more than enough for just about anything you might use this electric bike for. That’s good, because they’ve kept things simple with the mechanical drivetrain, giving you just a single speed for pedaling.

The bike is rather low to the ground, and I’m 6’1”, so it’s difficult to use the pedals. The fact is, you aren’t going to be pedaling a whole lot with an ebike like this, although this Yadea electric bike does have three pedal assist modes. Even if I was shorter, I think the seat would be too close to the pedals, so I’d almost exclusively use the throttle.

I turned acceleration all the way up in the P-settings and the Trooper 01 has really got some punch to it. It jumps to its top speed of 20 mph with the throttle. While it would be nice to have an “off-road mode” that unlocks speeds above Class 2, the only way you’ll get above 20 mph is by pedaling.

There is a slight throttle lag when you first touch the controls, and Yadea assures me this is built-in for safety reasons, to prevent unintented take-offs on the bike. Still, the Trooper is quick enough for commuting, even at 20 mph, and because the bike’s so low to the ground, it actually feels a lot faster than it is.

You get a 48V 20 amp battery in the Trooper 01. There’s a claimed 56 miles of range in the specs on this Yadea electric bike, and with a 960Wh battery, that kind of mileage is definitely possible, if you’re pedaling part of the time.

The cells are made by LG and the bike is UL Certified. The Yadea Trooper 01 is also built with battery management system that prevents overcharging, short-circuiting, overheating, and other electrical issues that can cause fires. You can see that Yadea has really gone the extra mile to make sure this electric bike is safe to charge indoors and out.

Soft Seat, Firm Suspension, Hydraulic Brakes

Yadea markets the Trooper 01 as an off-road electric bike, so I rode it on the rocky trails near Las Vegas, where I live.

Despite only having 80mm of travel in the front fork and maybe 20-30mm in the rear spring, this bike really handled the harder stuff well.

A shorter, stiffer suspension can actually do better in situations where there’s a lot of aggressive bumps, and fat tire bikes like this one dominate dirt trails in terms of traction

In fact, this ebike could be really good for camping, RVing, or even hunting and fishing.

You can easily swap out the rear spring for an air shock or upgraded spring with a bit more travel, so the fact that it’s not perfect out of the box should be a  deal breaker. What can be a deal breaker on a bike like this is an uncomfortable seat, since you can’t easily swap it out like a standard bike saddle.

Luckily, the Yadea Trooper 01 seat feels really good – a nice balance of firmness for support and softness for bumps. I wouldn’t see any need to try and change this out. There are other mods you can make, however, to get a better fit, like changing out the BMX-style handlebars for a taller set of bars.

Brakes are Tektro hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors, and they’ve got all the stopping power you need, as you’ll see in my full video review above, where I put this bike through its off-road paces.

Yadea Trooper 01: Is It Worth It? Our Verdict

The Yadea Trooper is really a great starter moped-style ebike, and an excellent value for the price. Not only do you get excellent built quality, full suspension and 20” x 4” fat tires, but the bike is also UL Certified, with a long-range LG-made battery and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, all for under $2,000.

I can think of a couple small things that Super 73 does better, but really, if you’ve got any mechanical skills at all, you can mod the Yadea all you want and turn it into an even cooler bike (or pay a bike shop to do it for you). There are modding forums for Super 73 owners that have a ton of tips for ebikes just like this one.

So, you could spend over three grand for a Super 73, but if you want to save $1K plus and still get a great Super 73-style off road electric bike, I think the Yadea Trooper 01 is a great choice for the money.
