First Ride Impressions: Velotric Nomad 2X Is a New Suspension Utility E-Bike

After reviewing more than 170 personal electric vehicles, I’ve learned to manage expectations—especially when it comes to fat tire e-bikes. A lot of brands talk a big game, but very few deliver something that really feels different. That’s what makes the Velotric Nomad 2X such a surprise. Right out of the box, this thing doesn’t just look serious—it is serious.
Velotric’s original Nomad was already a solid contender in the all-terrain category, but the 2X steps up with full suspension and specs that immediately caught my attention. So I did what I always do: got it built, hit the trail, and found out what’s hype and what’s real.

First Thing You Notice: It’s Built to Take a Beating
The Nomad 2X is big. No getting around that. You’re looking at an 80 lb e-bike with 26×4” fat Kenda tires and front-and-rear suspension. That combination doesn’t scream “nimble,” but surprisingly, it doesn’t feel sluggish either. There’s a certain confidence that comes from knowing your bike can handle just about anything you throw under it—and that’s the vibe I got right away.
The full-suspension setup is what elevates this from just another fat tire e-bike. 120mm of travel up front with air suspension, and 80mm in the rear, makes a real difference. If you’ve ridden hardtails before and never experienced a full-squish e-bike, the Nomad 2X will spoil you fast. On loose gravel, potholes, curbs—it just floats.

The Motor Packs Real Punch
Thumb throttle engaged, the 750W rear hub motor spools up fast—and the 105 Nm of torque is no joke. I climbed a steep fire road section I usually avoid on hub-motor bikes, and the Nomad 2X powered up with less struggle than expected. Combine that with the torque/cadence hybrid sensor and 8-speed Shimano Acera drivetrain, and you’ve got more control than you’d think for a bike this size.
It’s especially nice being able to toggle between pedal-assist styles depending on the terrain. Not many bikes let you do that. And let’s be honest: with this much motor behind you, you’re going to use that throttle more often than not—and that’s okay.
Suspension + Fat Tires = Underrated Combo
I’ve tested dozens of fat tire e-bikes over the years, and most ride like boats. Big, heavy, and great in sand or snow—but clumsy on trails. The Nomad 2X, however, is actually fun. The suspension helps the fat tires work for you instead of against you. It doesn’t just steamroll bumps—it smooths them out.
Does it feel like a $6,000 full-suspension mountain e-bike? Of course not. But at $2,399, it’s shockingly capable. And more importantly, it’s comfortable—which is what most fat tire buyers are after in the first place.
Battery, Range, and Real-World Practicality
The 48V 16.7Ah battery is nicely integrated into the downtube, and it’s removable for charging. Velotric claims 50 miles on throttle and up to 75 miles on pedal assist. I didn’t do a full drain on the first ride, but after about 22 miles of mixed terrain, throttle-heavy riding, I was still showing over half a charge. That’s a solid sign.
And you get some nice creature comforts: Apple FindMy tracking, a USB-C port on the 3.5” color display, and IPX7 waterproofing on the battery. This thing’s not just for fun—it’s meant to be used in real-world conditions.

Utility and Load Capacity Are No Joke
Velotric really leaned into the utility side of this bike. The payload rating is 560 lbs, and it’s even got a tow rating of 1,000 lbs. I haven’t hooked up a trailer (yet), but with the 120 lb rear rack, it’s easy to see this becoming a heavy-duty hauler for errands, gear, or even passengers.
A Few Quirks and Early Thoughts
It’s not perfect. The display is bright, but the interface could use some polish. The bike’s overall size might be intimidating for shorter riders, though the step-through option helps. And while the Stealth Mode—which dims lights and quiets the motor—is cool, I’m still figuring out exactly where that fits into daily use. Maybe night fishing? Urban stealth missions?
Still, none of that overshadows the fact that the Nomad 2X rides like a tank crossed with a Cadillac. Comfortable, capable, and just a little bit over-the-top—in a good way.
Final Word (for Now): Worth a Second Look
The Velotric Nomad 2X surprised me—in the best way. If you’re looking for a full-suspension fat tire e-bike that’s more than just a flashy spec sheet, this one deserves to be on your shortlist. It’s not a toy. It’s not a gimmick. It’s a well-built, versatile machine that feels purposefully designed for riders who actually ride.
I’ve got more time planned in the saddle, but after my first few rides, one thing’s clear: Velotric didn’t just update the Nomad. They leveled it up. Not the PEV for you? Check out our database.
