Bike Thefts are on the Rise: Use All Your Security Options with Anti-Theft GPS Tracking Devices

Because so many bike thefts go unreported, the problem is worst than it appears, and it appears there’s a bike stolen in the U.S. and Canada every 30 seconds.

What percentage of those bicycles are ebikes is impossible to say, but the number of electric bikes reported stolen has doubled in some cities over the past couple years.

Electric bikes are high value targets, and they’re easy to flip for quick cash. And since only around 5% of people who have their bike stolen ever see it again, the chances you’ll recover an expensive ebike seem slim to none, prompting more and more people to take out ebike theft insurance policies.

Here’s how to prevent ebike theft:

  • Always physically lock your bike wherever you go, no matter how long you plan to be away from it, even if you’re just ducking into a store for a few minutes. That’s all it can take for a thief to ride off with your bike (or toss it into a truck or van and drive away).
  • Make sure to use a hardened steel U-lock or chain that resists power saws and drills. The same technology that powers your bike also powers an array of handheld tools that cut through cheap cable locks with relative ease.
  • Avail yourself of your ebike’s anti-theft features, which in many cases feature GPS tracking so that if your bike is stolen, you can alert police to its location and very likely recover it before it’s lost for good.
  • If your ebike doesn’t have GPS anti-theft features, you can install your own. Attaching an Apple Airtag to your bike in a surreptitious location is one way to go. You can also purchase an aftermarket GPS anti-theft device specifically designed for mounting on bicycles.

EBike Mounts for Hidden AirTags, Etc.

We’ve ranked these mounts in order from most to least secure location. You might wish to mount an AirTag or other GPS tracking device to an ebike just to keep track of where its rider is (if the rider is a child, for example). In that case, mounting an AirTag to a reflector is fine.

But if you live in a high theft area or frequently lock your bike outside your your home for commuting or running errands, we highly recommend mounting an AirTag in the most hidden location possible so that thieves won’t find and discard it.

Make EBike Theft Harder

You can’t stop every possible instance of ebike theft, but you can make it much harder for thieves to get physical access your bike with a high quality, hardened steel U-lock.

You can stop thieves from getting away with your bike if they do steal it with a good GPS tracking security system. There’s nothing wrong with using an AirTag, but there are other options available, if your ebike doesn’t have GPS, and we’ve listed just a few above.

Whatever you choose, remember that bike thieves work 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, so there is never a time that you should leave your bike outside unlocked an unattended. Ideally, if you can, you should store ebikes in your house or a secure garage, and keep a tracker on them just in case they ever go missing.
