The new VMAX VX2 Lite may end up being one of the most important electric scooter launches of the year.

That is not because it is the fastest scooter, the lightest scooter or the cheapest scooter. It is because VMAX took much of what makes the more expensive VX2 Hub feel so solid and brought it down into a commuter scooter starting at $799.

You still get front and rear suspension, a 500W nominal motor with 1,400W peak power, 10-inch tubeless tires, front and rear turn signals, IPX6 water resistance and a two-year warranty. The biggest things you give up are top speed, the more advanced display and the additional rear mechanical brake found on the VX2 Hub.

For a lot of commuters, that sounds like a smart trade.

We tested the 56-mile Extended Range version, which carries a large 874Wh battery. We put it through acceleration, hill climbing, braking, range, weight, lighting and sound testing to find out how much premium VX2 performance actually survived the cost cutting.

The smaller battery should be enough for short urban commutes, especially if you can charge at work. The Extended Range version makes more sense for heavier riders, longer routes, hilly areas or anyone who does not want to charge every day.

Motor, Controller and Acceleration

The VX2 Lite uses a 500W nominal motor paired with VMAX’s V-Core 25A controller. Peak output is rated at 1,400W.

That controller matters more than the modest 500W nominal rating might suggest. The VX2 Lite can deliver a strong burst of current when accelerating or climbing, rather than feeling like a basic rental-style commuter scooter.

With Beast Mode unlocked and kick-start disabled, we recorded:

  • 0 to 10 mph in 2.9 seconds
  • 0 to 20 mph in 7.69 seconds
  • 0 to 25 mph in 14.04 seconds
  • One-eighth mile in 21.83 seconds

That is not neck-snapping performance, but it is strong for a 25 mph single-motor commuter. The launch is smooth enough for everyday riding while still giving the scooter enough punch to merge into a bike lane or get through an intersection without feeling sluggish.

The speedometer showed 27 mph during a slightly downhill run. The official maximum speed is 25 mph, and the transcript does not include a final GPS-verified top-speed number, so we would treat 25 mph as the reliable real-world target.

Hill-Climbing Test

We took the VX2 Lite up our long quarter-mile test hill, a climb that exposes both weak motors and controllers that cannot sustain their output.

The VX2 Lite completed the climb in 56.03 seconds.

It held roughly 17 to 18 mph through much of the test, briefly dropping to 16 mph before returning to 18 mph. That consistency is the important part. Plenty of commuter scooters feel powerful for the first few seconds and then fade as heat and load build.

The VX2 Lite continued delivering power throughout the climb.

VMAX officially rates the scooter for grades of up to 28 percent, although actual climbing speed will always depend on rider weight, battery charge, temperature and the length of the hill.

For riders living in a hilly city, this is one of the strongest reasons to choose the VX2 Lite over a typical entry-level commuter.

Real-World Range Test

The Extended Range version has a substantial 874Wh battery and a claimed maximum range of 56 miles.

We got 19.3 miles before the battery reached zero and the scooter stopped providing power.

That may sound far below the advertised number, but this was intentionally close to a worst-case test:

  • Approximately 200 lb rider
  • Approximately 225 lb including riding and testing equipment
  • Beast Mode and Sport Mode
  • Riding as fast as conditions allowed
  • Approximately 95-degree weather
  • Around 400 to 500 feet of elevation gain
  • Low wind

This test shows how far a heavier rider can expect to travel while using nearly all the scooter’s available performance. It is not a maximum-efficiency range test.

VMAX’s 56-mile estimate is based on a lighter 165 lb rider traveling at approximately 12 mph in ideal conditions. VMAX separately lists a 29.9-mile result for the long-range version in its own top-performance urban test.

Our take is that the real answer lies in three different range categories:

The middle estimate is an informed projection, not a separate RiderGuide range-test result. Rider weight, speed and hills can move the number substantially in either direction.

The big takeaway is not that every rider will travel 56 miles. It is that the 874Wh battery gives you a large energy reserve for a scooter weighing only about 52 pounds.

Ride Quality and Suspension

The VX2 Lite gets an oil-damped front suspension fork and a self-damping elastomer rear suspension. It is the same general suspension approach used on the more expensive VX2 Hub.

The ride is on the firmer side. This is not a softly sprung cruiser that floats over everything, but it takes the sharp edge off cracked pavement, expansion joints and typical city obstacles.

That firmness also contributes to the scooter’s handling. The VX2 Lite feels snappy, controlled and predictable rather than bouncy.

This distinction matters. Many inexpensive scooters technically have suspension, but use simple undamped springs that continue bouncing after an impact. The VX2 Lite’s oil-damped front fork feels more controlled and significantly more refined.

The 10-inch pneumatic tubeless tires add another layer of vibration absorption. Tubeless tires can still puncture, but they eliminate inner-tube pinch flats and generally make small punctures easier to seal.

Handling and High-Speed Stability

The VX2 Lite feels unusually stable for a relatively light commuter scooter.

During testing, we did not notice abnormal chassis movement, rattling, vibration or speed wobble. It tracks confidently in a straight line at speed but remains agile when carving or changing direction.

The steering angle is a little more than 45 degrees, giving it enough low-speed maneuverability for tight urban spaces. The compact chassis also makes it easier to flick from side to side than a 70 or 80-pound performance scooter.

That combination is one of the VX2 Lite’s best traits. It feels stable without feeling slow or cumbersome.

The scooter can travel over short gravel and grass sections when necessary, but the firm suspension, narrow commuter tires and compact deck make its priorities obvious. This is a road scooter, not an off-road scooter.

Braking Test

The VX2 Lite uses a front drum brake and rear regenerative electronic braking.

From 15 mph, we recorded two stopping distances of approximately:

  • 19.18 feet in 2.24 seconds
  • 18.9 feet in 2.02 seconds

That gives it a stopping distance of roughly 19 feet from 15 mph.

The braking system requires more distance than the mechanical disc and hydraulic systems we commonly test. Lever ergonomics also make it difficult to achieve maximum braking force while keeping two fingers wrapped around the grip. For the shortest stop, you need to commit more of your hand to the lever.

The benefit is extremely low maintenance.

A drum brake is enclosed and protected from road debris. There is no exposed rotor to bend, and the rear regenerative brake has no pads, cables or hydraulic fluid to replace.

For a commuter who prioritizes reliability and low maintenance, that is a worthwhile advantage. For someone who rides aggressively in dense traffic or regularly descends steep hills, stronger mechanical braking would be preferable.

The more expensive VX2 Hub adds a rear disc brake alongside its regenerative braking, which is one of the clearest reasons to upgrade.

Weight and Portability

VMAX lists the Extended Range version at 51.8 pounds. Our industrial scale measured 52.1 pounds, just 0.3 pound higher than the claimed weight.

That is refreshingly accurate.

A 52-pound scooter is not something most riders will enjoy carrying up several flights of stairs every day, but it remains portable compared with larger full-suspension performance scooters.

The folding latch is quick and straightforward. There are fewer steps and secondary mechanisms than on many complicated high-speed scooters.

Its folded dimensions are approximately 45.2 inches long, 21.9 inches wide and 21.1 inches high.

This should fit into many car trunks, although the fixed-width handlebars take up more space than folding-bar designs.

The official footboard dimensions are 18 by 7.4 inches, while our measured usable riding width was closer to 6.75 inches.

The handlebar is one of our main ergonomic complaints. Although it measures 22 inches from end to end, the turn-signal lighting occupies the outer sections. The usable hand position feels considerably narrower.

Smaller and average-sized riders may appreciate the compact cockpit. Larger riders may wish for a few extra inches of effective handlebar width.

The stem is also slightly more upright than many scooters we measure, which produces a neutral commuter riding position.

Lighting and Turn Signals

The headlight produced approximately 1,200 lux at six feet in our indoor test.

That is stronger than the roughly 600 to 800 lux we frequently see from basic commuter scooters, although it remains below the 2,000 to 3,000 lux range possible from some high-end performance scooters.

VMAX describes it as a 60-lux dual-cone front light. Lux readings depend heavily on distance and measurement method, so the manufacturer rating and our six-foot test number should not be compared directly.

The VX2 Lite also has:

  • Brake-light functionality
  • Front turn signals
  • Rear turn signals
  • Turn signals visible during daylight

Having signals at both ends is a meaningful commuter feature. Handlebar-end signals alone can be difficult for drivers behind you to see, while rear-only signals do not communicate your intentions as clearly to traffic approaching from the front.

Display and Controls

The display is one area where the Lite name becomes more obvious.

Speed, mileage and battery level are readable, but the smaller mode, lighting and signal icons can be difficult to see in direct sunlight. During testing, we sometimes needed to shade the screen to read the secondary indicators.

This is usable, but it does not feel as premium as the scooter’s chassis and suspension.

The VX2 Hub gets a more advanced full-color TFT display. The VX2 Lite instead uses a simpler LED dashboard with a linear battery meter.

On the positive side, VMAX does not require riders to create an app account to unlock the scooter’s main performance settings. Beast Mode and zero-start can be controlled through the scooter itself.

Noise and Horn Testing

We measured the motor at approximately:

  • 70 dB with Beast Mode active
  • 63 dB without Beast Mode
  • Approximately 80 dB from the horn

The motor is audible when running at maximum output, but we did not detect unusual grinding, rattling or chassis noises.

The lack of clicks and rattles was one of the strongest indicators of overall build quality during testing.

Water Resistance

The VX2 Lite carries an IPX6 water-resistance rating, which is unusually high for its price category.

One important correction to the video narration: we would not recommend pressure washing the scooter.

IPX6 indicates resistance to powerful water jets under controlled testing conditions, but it does not make the scooter waterproof. VMAX also lists water damage among its warranty exclusions. Use a damp cloth or low-pressure cleaning method, avoid submerging the scooter and do not deliberately spray bearings, electrical connections or charging ports.

Build Quality and Design

The VX2 Lite has a distinct industrial design that separates it from the many generic commuter scooters using similar frames and components.

More importantly, the structure feels solid. We did not hear clicks, creaks or rattles during the test, even while riding over rough pavement and small obstacles.

VMAX was founded in Switzerland in 2015 and expanded into the United States in 2023. Its US operation is based in Los Angeles.

The VX2 Lite appears to reuse much of the VX2 Hub’s core platform, including its deck, general dimensions, suspension layout and adult-sized riding position. The cost reduction comes primarily from lower speed, simpler braking and a less advanced display, rather than from replacing the entire chassis with a cheaper platform.

Warranty, Parts and Ownership

VMAX covers the VX2 Lite with a 24-month warranty.

The company says it will continue helping owners source replacement parts after the warranty expires. A valid proof of purchase is required for warranty claims.

Normal wear items, including brakes, tires, tubes and batteries, are excluded, as are damage caused by misuse, modifications, accidents, external factors, water or improper repairs. The scooter’s manual takes precedence over the general online warranty page.

Two years is better than the one-year coverage commonly included with commuter scooters, but buyers should still read the complete terms and maintain their original receipt.

The VMAX VX2 Lite succeeds because VMAX appears to have removed the right things.

It loses the VX2 Hub’s 34 mph top speed, rear disc brake and premium TFT display. Those are meaningful compromises, but the scooter keeps the parts that most directly affect everyday ride quality: a sturdy chassis, properly damped full suspension, strong controller output, tubeless tires and a large battery option.

Our 19.3-mile range result also gives the claimed 56-mile figure some necessary context. Heavy riders traveling at maximum speed through hills should not expect anything close to 56 miles. Slow, efficient riding can substantially extend that result, and the 874Wh battery still provides more usable energy than most scooters in this size and weight class.

The braking distance and narrow effective handlebar are the main drawbacks. Neither ruins the scooter, but both should influence how and where you ride.

For commuters who want a powerful, comfortable and low-maintenance scooter without paying for 30-plus-mph performance, the VMAX VX2 Lite is one of the most compelling new options we have tested.

It feels much closer to a simplified premium commuter than an upgraded entry-level scooter, and that is exactly why this launch matters.
