Unboxing the Solar E-Clipse: A 72V Electric Dirt Bike with a Carbon Fiber Frame!

If you know the electric vehicle market, you probably know the Surron X, the Taleria STING, and maybe little else when it comes to electric dirt bikes. That’s because there hasn’t been much other competition in the category until now – with the release of the Solar E-Clipse.

Some other electric bikes like the Super 73, Onyx, and even the Roadrunner Pro kind of fly under the radar. They’re not quite big and fast enough to classify as electric motorcycles; too big or fast to call ebikes. But the Solar E-Clipse is most definitely an electric motorcycle, and maybe even a superior electric motorbike to the Surron X. 

You’ll have to wait for our numbers (and they’re coming very soon) to learn if Solar’s claimed top speed of 60mph and max range of 70 miles (in ECO mode) measure up in real-world testing. So far, as you can see in our unboxing video, reviewers are majorly impressed. 

Priced at $6200 US ($4999.99 pounds), the E-Clipse features a lightweight carbon-fiber frame, motorcycle-grade dual hydraulic suspension, and a 72V 45Ah (3,240Wh!) battery. That’s 42% more battery capacity than the largest Surron X and almost 30% more than the Wolf King GT and Dualtron X. 

The only personal electric vehicles we’ve tested with larger batteries are the massive Dualtron X Limited and Storm Limited. (The E-Clipse weighs tens of pounds less than the X Limited.) And the E-Clipse’s battery is removable and swappable!

Solar’s super-stylish new electric bike also has a 71A sinewave controller, hydraulic disc brakes with braided cables, keyless start AND a steering lock. 

Thanks to a large, fan-cooled 10A charger, the Eclipse charges in only 3-4 hours, and it has a dust and water resistance rating of IP67 and can carry riders up to 330 lbs.

Oh, and did we mention it will be street legal soon? 

You’ll need a motorcycle license on the road, but Solar promises that in a couple months, you’ll be able to screw a license plate to the E-Clipse’s plate mount and drive to brunch. We have no reason to doubt it. It’s the only personal electric vehicle we’ve ever tested with a VIN!

To enable the E-Clipse’s road legality, Solar will offer “bespoke service.” If it’s anything like the service they’ve offered on their highly-rated electric scooters, then it will be some of the best in the business, even for US customers of the UK-based company.

Right now, the Solar E-Clipse is a dirt bike that will probably make favorite electric motorcycles like the Surron X and Taleria STING work harder to keep up. Soon, it could also be your favorite choice for the street, too.
